COLLABORATING FACILITIES

Affiliated facilities are not offered through the CNMS proposal and review process but users may make independent arrangements to use these facilities through establishing a research collaboration with the ORNL scientists who are responsible for them. Often, a user may first recognize only after a project has begun that one of these facilities would be useful and arrangements can be discussed at that time. These facilities may be cited in a user proposal only if the proposal writer first obtains written consent from the ORNL collaborator and attaches a copy with the proposal submission. Users may contact the CNMS User Coordinator or a Theme Leader at any time for help in identifying the appropriate collaborator for one of these facilities.

PLD of Catalyst Films - Continuous Compositional Spread Optimazation
(Affiliated with Functional Nanomaterials-Oxides)
Continuous compositional-spread (CCS) for catalyst optimization: pulsed-laser deposition of metallic films with orthogonally overlapping “wedge”-shaped thickness profiles.

PLD of Oxide Thin Films - Continuous Compositional Spread Discovery
(Affiliated with Functional Nanomaterials)
Continuous compositional-spread (CCS) for oxide film search and discovery: pulsed-laser deposition of complex oxide films with laterally varying chemical composition across (pseudo-)binary or (pseudo-)ternary phase diagrams, without requiring a post-annealing process.

Temperature Gradient Pulsed Laser Deposition of Thin Films
(Affiliated with Functional Nanomaterials)
Temperature-gradient method for oxide film growth: simultaneous pulsed-laser deposition onto multiple substrates at different temperatures.

Electrical Characterization (Affiliated with Functional Nanomaterials-Oxides)

  • Resistance as a function of temperature
  • Capacitance as a function of frequency, bias voltage, and temperature
  • Ferroelectric hysteresis and fatigue

Catalysis Reactors (Affiliated with Catalysis & Nano-Building Blocks; Contact-C. Narula)

  • High pressure flow reactor, (up to 1500 psi and 600ºC). Reactor is currently optimized for studies of oxidative dehydrogenation.
  • Benchtop flow reactor for studies of emission control catalysts. Reactor is currently optimized for studies with simulated vehicle exhaust and capable of lean/rich swings, for studies of NOx catalysts, NOx traps and 3-way catalyst behavior.
  • Ex-situ reactor for treating samples for TEM studies. Reactor is currently optimized for studies of effects of simulated vehicle exhaust upon structure of catalysts.

UHV MOKE, magneto optical Kerr effect (Affiliated with Magnetism & Quantum Transport)

  • magnetic hysteresis for ultra-thin films and surfaces from 20-500 K and 0.7 T with in situ MBE.

LEED I-V Analysis of layered or thin film transition metal oxides (TMOs). Combined experimental / theoretical capability using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and locally developed codes to permit analysis of surface structure and dopant concentration at the surface of TMOs.

UHV, Cryogenic, High Field MOKE (Affiliated with Magnetism & Quantum Transport)

  • field to 5 T in all direction

PPMS, Physical Property Measurement System (Affiliated with Magnetism & Quantum Transport)

  • macroscopic measurements of Heat Capacity, Magnetometry, Electronic and Thermal Transport

SQUID, Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (Affiliated with Magnetism & Quantum Transport)

  • macroscopic measurements of magnetic fields to 4.2 K

Spin-polarized STM (Affiliated with Imaging & Characterization)

  • Omicron VT STM with Fe-coated tips for spin-dependent tunneling
